The European Commission on Tuesday proposed a five-year ban on cloning animals for food purposes, but it didn't move to restrict sales of food from the offspring of clones due to traceability concerns. The commission's report calls for products of cloned animals to be kept out of the EU food chain until further evidence emerges on the safety of the technology, citing animal welfare concerns. However, despite calls from the European Parliament for a moratorium to cover offspring of clones as well, the commission says it rejects this option on the ground that it is impossible to regulate on the global market due to traceability concerns (see FCN Sept. 13, Page 6).
