In a climate of stagnant or decreasing funds for agricultural research, leaders from the world's 20 most powerful nations last week strategized on how to do more about the looming global food security crisis without more resources. Catherine Woteki, USDA's undersecretary for research, education and economics, returned upbeat from the unprecedented meeting of agricultural research leaders from the G-20 countries, in Guadalajara, Mexico. In a telephone interview with Food Chemical News on Monday morning, she stressed that last week was the first opportunity for the ag research leaders to get together to discuss immediate food security challenges "as well as the looming need to produce enough food and other agricultural products by mid-century."
