THE mining sector is faced with numerous challenges, many of which do not have solutions in science, engineering and technology - sovereign risk, cyclic demand, access to land, access to finance and access to labour, among other problems. However, it is technological advancements, both incremental and step-change, that keep companies in business in an increasingly competitive world. While all these challenges are represented in some form or another in all countries, they have different weightings depending on where a company might be operating. For example, access to relatively low-cost labour may not be a problem in some parts of the world, but sovereign risk may.
