LONMIN plc, the world's third-largest platinum producer, said earnings dropped 89% in the half year to end March on weaker platinum group metals (PGM) prices and rising costs.Pretax profit dropped to US$18 million from US$159 million in the same period last year as revenue declined 20%.The company was one of the many South African platinum producers that saw its output affected by a high number of Section 54 safety stoppages and labour unrest. Lonmin said it lost about 464,000t of ore production as a result of these disruptions, up from the 166,000t lost in the year-earlier period.
