Leverkusen— Lanxess, in partnership with BioAmber Inc., said it plans to begin producing phthalate-free plasticizers using bio-based succinic acid as raw material from 2012 onwards. BioAmber has developed technology to produce succinic acid through the fermentation of renewable raw materials. The process consumes "considerably less" energy than the production of succinic acid using fossil fuels, is "significantly more" cost-effective and has a better carbon footprint, explained Lanxess. In the future, BioAmber plans to use waste from the agricultural industry and sugar cane processing as starting materials.
