Ludwigshafen— BASF has begun producing 1,4-butanediol (BDO) at commercial volumes, using Genomatica's one-step fermentation process that is based on sugars as renewable feedstock, and is offering the product to customers for testing and commercial use (PCN, 13 May 2013, p 2). BASF has not disclosed the location of the new BDO plant, but currently produces BDO in Ludwigshafen, Germany; Geismar, La.; Chiba, Japan; Kuantan, Malaysia, and Caojing, China. Earlier this year, BASF announced plans for a joint venture BDO plant in Korla, China.
