Dallas-Celanese Corp. and Mitsui & Co. have signed an agreement to establish an equally-owned joint venture for the production of methanol at Celanese's Clear Lake, Texas, complex. Last year, Celanese announced plans to build and operate a methanol plant at Clear Lake with one or more partners (PCN, 18 June 2012, p 1). The planned methanol plant will have a capacity of 1.3-million t/y and will use abundant, low-cost natural gas in the U.S. Gulf Coast region as a feedstock. The project, which is expected to begin production in mid-2015, will benefit from the existing infrastructure at the site.
