Barcelona— BASF and Corbion Purac (Purac), through their Succinity GmbH joint venture, have started up a new 10,000-t/y bio-based succinic acid plant at Purac's Montmelo site near Barcelona, Spain (PCN, 15 Oct 2012, p 2). "Based on technological advances and an increased need for renewable intermediates in different application fields," the venture has "been working on the development of bio-based succinic acid since 2009," explained BASF, adding that "bio-based succinic acid features a significantly improved carbon footprint compared to conventional, fossil-based succinic acid or other dicarboxylic acids."
