Jubail—Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (Sabic) has become the Middle East's largest intellectual property owner, having more than 10,000 patents either issued or pending approval. In 2013, Sabic filed a record 373 patent applications, an increase of over 300% from the 2010 figure. That figure may be even higher this year, with 159 new patent applications applied for in just the first three months, Sabic noted. "Intellectual property is an important tool to help Sabic achieve its business goals," said Ernesto Occhielo, executive vice president of technology and innovation. "Our 10,400 global patent dockets are a reflection of our emphasis on innovation to support our growth," he explained, adding that Sabic also has over 550 active disclosures under review.
