Optical limiting (OL) properties of two hexagonal prism metal clusters, W_2Ag_4S_8(PPh_3)_4 and Mo_2Ag_4S_8(PPh_3)_4 doped in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymer and DMF solutions, respectively, were contrastively investigated by using nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm with a repetition rate of 1 Hz. Experimental results show that the output fluence of DMF solutions for the two samples are both lower than that of their PMMA polymers at a given input fluence; this means DMF solutions of W _2Ag_4S_8(PPh_3)_4 and Mo _2Ag_4S_8(PPh_3)_4 have better OL properties than that of solid PMMA polymers. The reason is explained by a stimulated scattering theory. That is because the scattering degree of solutions is stronger than that of the corresponding solid polymers due to large density perturbations for solution samples.
