A primer on reusable and disposable cleanroom garments as well as garment testing and laundering. Sixty years ago, scientists in the aerospace, semiconductor, microelectronics, medical device, and pharmaceutical industries observed that the root cause of many product failures was due to contamination from personnel working near the production sites. At this time the results were presented at the Institute of Environmental Science (IES) annual technical meetings (ATM) and initiated the formation of working groups (WG) to document and standardize the best practices generated in these industries. Current contamination control subject matter experts collaborate semi-annually on several working groups that are now the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (IEST) recommended practices for contamination control. These recommended practices became the foundation of the ISO 14644 international standards for cleanroom and associated cleanroom environments. The history of cleanroom garments is found in the drafts and revisions of IEST-RP-CC003, Garment Considerations for Cleanrooms and Other Controlled Environments. The most recent version is 3.4. It was published in 2011. The current IEST WG-3 is discussing cleanroom flame retardant (FR) garments. This document addresses: 1. Type of cleanroom fabrics and findings 2. Type, style and construction of cleanroom garments 3. The garment cleaning process 4. Testing of cleanroom garments 5. A guide to measuring garments.
