Not surprisingly, thermal coal exports were the big story in December from US East Coast terminal hubs Hampton Roads and Baltimore. T. Parker Host released through Energy Publishing yesterday its remarkably comprehensive statistics for the East Coast ports at Hampton Roads and at Baltimore. At Hampton Roads, fully 1.02 million - 32% -- of a total of 3.15 million short tons exported were bound for the thermal market. During the first 11 months of 2011, a total of 35.06 million tons of coal were exported through the three Hampton Roads terminals - CSX-served DTA and Pier IX and Norfolk Southern's Lamberts Point terminal - and a rather sparse 6.69 million st - 19% - consisted of thermal coal.
