Our native North American bamboos are interlocking pieces of a complex botanical puzzle box: How many species are there? What are their closest relatives? How are they distinct? Should Asiatic bamboos like Pleioblastus and Pseudosasa be part of the same genus as our native canes? Recent investigations using the powerful tools of molecular biology and a careful reevaluation of morphology and ecology are casting new light on these mysteries, with some surprising and exciting results. Among the achievements in the past year is the recognition of a new species of bamboo from the southern Appalachian Mountains (hill cane, Arundinaria appalachiand). Another achievement is the discovery of DNA evidence that the North American species appear to be more diverse than previously thought, as hill cane takes its place alongside our other native bamboos: river (or giant) cane (A. giganted) and switch cane (A. tecta). And ongoing molecular-based studies are helping us to understand major events in the evolution of these species and their Asian cousins, including Pleioblastus and Pseudosasa but also Sasa, Sasamorpha, and other more distant relatives among the temperate bamboos.
