The weakness in the Japanese extrusions market continued into September with total domestic production of extruded products for September falling 1.1 percent year-on-year to 77,283 tonnes. Shipments also tracked production lower, declining 1.5 percent year-on-year to 76,465 tonnes. Although both production and shipments remain weak, the rates of decline have moderated significantly from the double-digit rates recorded in August. Indeed, production has not risen year-on-year since December 2006, while shipments have now decreased from the year ago level for 20 consecutive months. Meanwhile, inventories were up 1.4 percent month-on-month as current market conditions ensure order activity remained subdued.
