Cotton grading is primarily governed by three factors namely colour, foreign matter, fibre quality and ginning preparation. Colour of cotton sample gives information on weathering, attack by fungi, damage by insects etc. The amount and type of foreignmatter depends on the condition of harvesting and storing, weather condition prevalent before and during picking. The preparation gives information concerning storage and handling condition prior to ginning and also on how efficiently the cotton has been ginned without compromising its fibre quality. Grade of cotton sample is an index of itsfibre quality and plays a crucial role in the assignment of commercial value. Development of High Volume Instrumentation for fibre quality evaluation replaced handclassing and improved precision, accuracy and repeatability in measurements. It initiated quality based marketing of cotton, improving mill and product performance. Present review highlights developments in cotton grading and fibre quality evaluation techniques.
