Combining Analysis for Lint Yield and Fibre Quality Traits in Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

The present study was undertaken to study the combining ability effects of 8 parental lines to produce high yielding hybrids. For this purpose, 15 upland cotton hybrids were developed by crossing 5 lines with three testers in line x tester design during Kharif 2010-11. These hybrids along with their 15 parents (5 females and 3 males) were evaluated during Kharif, 2011-12 at three stations of Navsari Agricultural University viz., Surat, Navsari and Achhalia. The combining ability analysis revealed that non-additive variances played a major role in the expression of lint yield and fibre quality traits. GCA effects revealed that none of the parents was a good general combiner for all the traits. Among parental lines, parents GSHV 01/1338 and GSHV 112 were good general combiners for lint yield, fibre maturity coefficient and former also for fibre length and Micronaire. Among the cross combinations, five crosses viz., G Cot 10 x 76-IH-20, G Cot 20 x GSHV 112, GSHV 01/1338 x GSHV 112, GSHV 97/612 x BC-68-2WW and GSHV 01/12 x BC-68-2WW were found to be the best specific combiners for lint yield per plant. The hybrids are the resultant of average x average, average x good, good x good and poor x poor GCA effects of parents. The SCA effect of these hybridsdid correlate with per se performance and GCA effects of parents.
