Cottonseed cake is a rich protein source used traditionally in ruminant feeds and used as nitrogen source for various fermentations. However, extensive use of this protein is restricted due to the presence of gossypol, which has toxic effect on non-ruminants. The objective of this present study was to determine the effect of seven different fungal strains on the reduction of free gossypol (FG), total gossypol (TG), crude protein (CP), crude fibre (CF) and oil content during Solid state fermentation (SSF) of cottonseed cake and meal. The study involved different cottonseed extractions for fermentation such as De-oiled cottonseed cake (DOCSK), Decorticated cottonseed cake (DCSK), Un-decorticated cottonseed cake (UDCSK) and Cottonseed meal (CSM). The experimental results showed that the microbial fermentation could greatly decrease gossypol, fibre and oil and increase protein contents whereas the detoxification efficiency varies between the substrates used. The maximum reduction in FG (81%), TG (59%),CF (44%), oil content (85%) and increased protein (18%) was found in UDCSK fermented substrate as compared to others. The cottonseed extractions fermented by C. tropicalis, S. cerevisiae, S. cerevisiae 6933, P. sajor-caju and P. flabellatus have reduced gossypol and improved nutritional properties which could be a potent protein feed supplement for non-ruminants.
