Cotton Leaf Reddening-Systematic Damage Caused by Use of Methomyi in Cotton

Methomyi (S-methyl-N-[(methylcarbamoyl)oxy}-thioacetimidate) is a broad spectrum carbamate insecticide and nematicide and is extensively used as foliar spray in cotton. Methomyi has an ovicidal action and is recommended at 300-400g a.i./ha to controlbollworm in cotton. This study reports the effect of foliar application of three commercially available methomyi formulations against six popular cotton hybrids. The foliar application of insecticides irrespective of the formulations at the recommended dose (0.2gL ') led to reddening of whole plant within 24-48 hours in all the hybrids tested. The photosynthetic apparatus was damaged as indicated by reduction in chlorophyll content (20-28%) and concomitant increase in anthocyanin content (60%). The major biochemical constituents showed a decline with the application of insecticide viz., reducing sugar (36%), amino acid (20%), proline (24%) and protein (14%) respectively. This is the first report to demonstrate that methomyi damages adaxial leaf by damaging the stomatal guardcells, mesophyll cells and entering into the veins. Methomyi movement can be tracked by trail of anthocynin left behind and that finally leading to death of cells. Even though there were reports on damage of membrane permeabihty, leakage of electrolytes and reddening of leaves, this is the first confirmed report of cellular damage caused by methomyi application through studies on mesophyll cells.
