Pruning Technique for Second Fruiting Cycle in Cotton Crop

Field experiments were conducted at Central Institute for Cotton Research, Regional station Coimbatore, during 2012-13 on Su (Gbarbadense) and Suraj (Ghirsutum) cotton under poly-mulched condition, to study the effect of deep pruning and nutrie consortia spray on yield and fibre quality. Pruning was effected soon after 3rd picking and new sprouts initiated within 8-10 daj Squaring started within 40 days and boiling within 70 days. Photosynthetic rate, nitrate reductase activity and chlorophyll content the leaves of pruned crop were marginally lower compared to the normal crop. However, nutrient consortia spray boosted the activil significantly in both normal and pruned crop. At harvest, 31 bolls per plant were recorded in pruned crop compared to 44in the normi crop of Suraj. Boll size was significantly smaller in pruned than the normal crop. Nutrient consortia spray could increase the boll siz marginally. Irrespective of the nutrient consortia spray, kapas yield of 31.4 q/ha was harvested from normal crop and an additional yiel of 20.1 q/ha by pruning technique. Nutrient consortia spray increased yield significantly in both the normal and pruned crop in Sura and Suvin. Thus, an additional yield of 60-70% could be attained by pruning technique. Fibre quality parameters were not affected dut to pruning. The FQI was 388 for pruned crop compared to 353 for normal crop. The study indicated that second fruiting cycle in cottor is possible by giving appropriate pruning followed by nutrient managementto realize additional yield in the same season.
