Field and Laboratory Evaluation of Neem Based and Synthetic Insecticides for theManagement of Whitefly in Cotton

Whitefly is a key sucking pest of cotton as it affects the plant due to its feeding and as a vector of deadly cotton leaf curl virus disease. Laboratory and Field trials were carried out to compare the effect of commercial neem based products including neem seed kernel extract (NSKE 5%) with that of synthetic insecticide (Diafenthiuron 50WP, Triazophos and Flonicamid 50 WG) along with a control against Bemisia tabaci. Under laboratory conditions, the treatments were applied on cotton leaves whereas in field, treatments were applied 3 times as foliar sprays on cotton plants in a plot during the cotton growing season. Observations were recorded before one day and 24 and 72 hours after treatment in case of laboratory evaluation whereas under field conditions observations were recorded before one day and after 7 days after treatment. Under laboratory conditions, diafenthiuron, triazophos were recorded with highest whitefly mortality followed by Neemazal T/S 5.0% @ 1.0 ml /litre as well as Neemazal T/S1.0% @ 5.0 ml/litre, Indoneem and NSKE 5%. The data recorded under field conditions revealed diafenthiuron and triazophos as potential treatments in reduction of whitefly population but the neem based products especially neemazal also gave good control of whitefly under field conditions. As far as the non target effect of these insecticides is concerned the neem based insecticides were safer to the generalist predators and can be used during the earlier part of season and also used as an alternative tochemical insecticides during later part of cotton season.
