摘要

When the novelist lain Banks was diagnosed earlier this year with late stage gall bladder cancer his public reaction was inspiring in its quiet, self-deprecating dignity. First, he insisted on praising politely the "professionalism of the medics involved" and "the speed with which the resources of the NHS in Scotland have been deployed" before adding, with some understatement, that he was disappointed that "the outcome hasn't been more cheerful". Then, with a wry apology for the "ghoulish humour" of the phrase, he passed on the news that he had asked his partner to "do me the honour of becoming my widow".
