This paper provides an overview of the gains made by the Technology Mission on Cotton in its effort to modernize the Indian ginning industry through Mini Mission-IV, the implementation of which was entrusted to the Cotton Corporation of India. As manyas 885 composite G&P units have been upgraded or newly set up with financial support from the Government of India over the last 10 years under this Mini Mission slated to end in December, 2010. Modem machines and matching civil infrastructure provided in ginneries, together with management practices prescribed under the scheme, have served to reduce trash and contaminants which were abundant in baled cotton in pre-TMC years. In the realms of ginning and cotton trade, TMC has become a brand name synonymous with quality and distinction. The makeover undergone by the Indian cotton, which is now wholly acceptable to spinning mills in India and abroad, has the potential to transform the entire textile economy of the country.
