Wilt, basically a gross symptom of events in higher plants can be induced by pathogenic as well as non pathogenic agents. The pathogen induced wilt is a result of sequence of pathological events where pathogens initiate process, pass it through defined processes and alter the physiology in such a way that the end result is wilt. A new wilt like symptom, parawilt was observed way back in early eighties in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Tamilnadu and later noticed in all parts of the country in hybrid cottons. The symptoms were wilt like, drooping of leaves, drying andpre mature abscission of leaves andfruiting parts followed by death as if caused by pathogenic wilt. Unlike pathogenic wilt, it occurs in groups of plants infields and this melody was noticed to be sporadic in distribution. Environmental conditions like high temperature, bright sun light followed by heavy rainfall were found to favour the occurrence of this wilt. Parawilt was found to occur due to asphyxiation and can be more in Bt cotton plants because of higher boll retention. Farmers need to be educated that water, nutrients and soil management are extremely crucial to get the best performance of Bt. cotton. In this paper, all these aspects have been discussed in detail.
