The extended climate change meeting in Paris, France ended on Dec. 12 with all participating nations, about 200, agreed to voluntarily cut emissions in order to limit the global temperature rise to "well below" 2 °C (3.6 °F) above pre-industrial levels. The agreement will take effect from 2020. In the meantime, a large number of businesses, including Europe's biggest oil and gas companies and a wide variety of international firms in other sectors, have expressed hopes that world leaders meeting in Paris will focus on setting a uniform price on carbon. The important thing, business leaders have repeatedly said, is put in place incentives to reduce emissions that do not show favoritism to any particular company or region or green technology. "Market-based carbon solutions are the most effective as they reward the lowest-emission fuels, and can work on a large scale," said BG CEO Helge Lund. "Governments will not have to 'pick winners' in terms of energy technologies, as the market will dictate the most efficient solutions."
