Phase equilibria of the Mg-Mn-Zn ternary system at 593 K (320 degrees C) have been investigated by using five Mg-Mn-Zn diffusion couples and thirty equilibrated alloys. The samples were examined by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalyses (EPMA). No ternary compound was observed. The MgZn2 was determined to extend into the Mg-Mn-Zn system with a maximum solubility of 14.0 at. % Mn. The Mg51Zn20 phase, which is not stable at 593 K (320 degrees C) in the binary Mg-Zn system, is stabilized with the addition of a very little amount of Mn. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
