Duetotheirexcellentspecificstrengthandenvironmentalresistance,titaniumanditsalloyshavebeenwidelyusedasstructuralcomponents.However,titaniumisveryactive,sothatnotonlyoxygenandnitrogen,butalsohydrogenmaybereadilyintroducedintothematerialduringmanufacturing.Titaniumusuallycontainsaspecificamountofhydrogen,anditexistsinthetitaniumasahydrideorsolidsolutiondependentonthehydrogencontent.Thehydrogensolidsolubilitylimitofpuretitanium(a-phasetitanium)seemstobehigherthan10ppm[1],althoughsomevaluesarereported.Thatistosay,ifthehydrogencontentofpuretitaniumislessthan10ppm,allthehydrogenisthoughttobeasolidsolutioninthetitanium.Ontheotherhand,whenthehydrogencontentismorethanthesolidsolubilitylimit,hydrideswouldappear.Asthehydrideisbrittle,itweakensthestrengthofthetitanium.Therefore,thehydrogencontentincommerciallypuretitanium(CP-Ti)iswithin150ppm[2].
