Recently,thermoelectricmaterialshavebeenattractingattentioninthefieldofeffectiveenergysavingbyutili-zationofwasteheat.Mg2SiandMg2Si-basedmaterialsareexpectedtobeusedasanalternativetoPbTeforapplica-tioninthermoelectricdevicesinthetemperaturerangefrom500to800Kbecauseoftheirhighthermoelectricproperties.Moreover,Mg2Sihasthelowestdensity,i.e.,2.0g/cm3,amongthermoelectricmaterialsanditsconstit-uentelements,i.e.,MgandSi,areabundantandnontoxic[1–4].AccordingtotheMg–SiphasediagrampresentedbyOkamotoetal.[5],Mg2Siistheonlybinaryphaseofthissystemandmeltsat1354K.BecausethemeltingpointofMg2SiisclosetotheboilingpointofMg(1363K)andthevaporizationofMgfromtheMg–Simeltissignificantaroundthistemperature,preparationofMg2Sipolycrys-tallinebulkandsinglecrystalsfromtheMg–Simelthasbeenperformedunder0.2–0.4MPaofinertgastosuppressMgvaporization[6–10].High-pressureprocessingtech-niquessuchassparkplasmasintering(SPS)andhot-pressing(HP)havealsobeenutilizedtoformaMg2SipolycrystallinebulkbelowthemeltingpointofMg2Si.ThestartingmaterialsforthebulkfabricationwereamixtureofMgandSipowdersandMg2Sipowderpreparedbymechanicalalloying[11–15].
