Using a sound methodology, having a representative sample and a sufficient sample size, surveys and interviews usually give a good impression of individual and collective drug use. Patterns of drug use can be verified, but also reasons for drug use can be investigated. In liberal countries such as The Netherlands, recreational drug users talk openly about their drug use because they do not risk severe punishment and their behavior is more or less acceptable among their peers. Hence, surveys give a fairly good estimation of the use of drugs of abuse. However, in more restrictive societies and specific populations surveys may underestimate drug use. Especially if penalties for drug use are high, people are less likely to admit using illicit drags. For example, military personnel risk loosing their job when admitting drug use and prisoners risk extended sentencing when drugs are detected. It is likely that surveying these populations will reveal much less reliable data on the prevalence of using drugs of abuse.
