The UK has awarded Eni a carbon dioxide appraisal and storage license to study the potential development of depleted oil and gas fields in the East Irish Sea off Liverpool Bay as permanent CO2 storage sites (IOD Sep.24’20). Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is seen as a crucial weapon in the UK’s armory to reach net- zero emissions by 2050. London is working on a targeted support scheme for CCS through the use of contract-for-difference agreements, similar to those which have helped the UK become the world’s largest offshore wind market by installed capacity.
