After breaking an export record in 2017, Gazprom started 2018 with a decline in supplies to Europe as demand decreased amid a warmer winter, the Russian state natural gas giant’s disclosure data show (IOD Jan.5’18). Gazprom did not publish exports statistics for the first 15 days of January like it did last year. But its data, disclosed in accordance with the EU Regulation on Wholesale Energy Market Integrity and Transparency (Remit), show that physical flows from Russia decreased 12% on the year to 7.7 Bcm in the first half of the month. The Remit data does not count Gazprom’s volumes taken from European gas storage facilities, which the Russian company includes in its exports statistics. But the decline in physical flows reflects a general decline in demand.
