Offshore drilling rig owner Transocean plans to scrap four cold-stacked rigs as it takes steps to pare down the glut of deepwater and midwater units in an oversupplied global market. The rig retirements will result in a non-cash impairment of $520 million for Transocean in the second quarter of this year, the company said. Headed for the scrapheap are ultra-deepwater drillships Deepwater Discovery, Deepwater Frontier and Deepwater Millennium. The Discovery, which has been stacked since March 2015, entered service in 2000. The latter two rigs started work in 1999 and have been stacked since November 2015 and May 2016, respectively.
