摘要

A meeting between Peter Altmaier, Germany's minister of economic affairs, and Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller in Berlin late Wednesday signals that the Russian gas giant's Nord Stream 2 export pipeline project retains German support despite persisting regulatory and sanctions risks. As construction of Nord Stream 2 is already under way, with over 200 km of pipe laid in the Baltic Sea, the risks appear to be receding, although Nord Stream 2 still faces opposition from some EU states as well as the US and is not well liked in Brussels, either. But Germany still believes the scheme is justified by the high utilization rates of the currently operating 55 Bcm/yr Nord Stream pipe and growing demand for Russian gas in Europe, according to a statement released by Gazprom after Miller's meeting with Altmaier.
