Seaborne coking coal prices in the cfr market jumped on Wednesday December 9 due to relatively tight supplies for steel mills in China, sources told Fastmarkets. With the continuing lack of Australian coal in the Chinese market, no transactions were heard on Wednesday, sources said, although some heard news of a deal being done at the end of last week. A late-January-laycan cargo of premium hard coking coal traded at around $179 per tonne cfr China last Friday, sources said, leading two sources to estimate the premium low-volatility hard coking coal price at $178 per tone cfr China and the premium mid-volatility hard coking coal at $175 per tonne cfr China.
