China's huge efforts to reduce its industrial pollution over the last five years have had a major effect on the supply of both natural and synthetic graphite. Now, halfway through 2019, Roskill notes constraints from other regions starting to influence the graphite industry. Closures now in India: In February 2019, a court ruled the closure of Graphite India's graphite electrode plant in Bangalore following concerns over pollution. Graphite India is a major international manufacturer of graphite electrodes. So far, pollution controls have been focused mainly on China and this is the first major case of closures in the Indian market. Although it is unlikely that we will see sudden, widespread plant inspections and closures in India (as in China), we could see more closures brought about by local administration.
