With reduced revenue and increased costs, there is an increased i emphasis on improving efficiency and productivity of ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). Improving efficiency of an ASC is critical to its economic viability. ASC efficiency can be defined as increasing productivity (i.e. number of surgical procedures performed in a given time period) while minimizing costs. Thus, improved efficiency implies that more surgical procedures are performed at the same operating room capacity, or that less operating room capacity is needed for the same number of surgical procedures. Streamlining patient throughput in an ASC should improve overall productivity. Patient throughput in an ASC is influenced by several elements including preoperative, operating room, and postoperative (phase I and phase II) factors, all of which are interconnected.
