摘要

Sacred groves are small patches of forests conserved through man's spiritualbelief and faith. They are often the onlylingering samples of natural vegetationin the man-modified landscapes. In suchgroves the highest levels of biologicaldiversity are found. Besides centre ofhigh species richness, they act as agene pool and provide refuge to a largenumber of endemic, endangered andthreatened species, and render ecological services such as source of perennialwater, maintain local micro-environmentalconditions and help in biogeochemicalcycles. In India, nearly 13,720 sacredgroves have been enumerated from 19 states. Kerala, Maharashtra, AndhraPradesh and Tamil Nadu have the maximum number of sacred groves.
