Record of a new entomopathogenic fungus on sugarcane woolly aphid.

A fungus producing black spores was found infecting sugarcane wooly aphid (Ceratovacuna lanigera) in Sankeshwar, Karnataka, India, in July 2005. The fungus, which could spread over an area of 100 acres on its own within one month, was identified as Acremonium zeylanicum. This is the first record of this fungus on sugarcane wooly aphid. The fungus produces spores in large numbers during favourable conditions, such as high relative humidity (>90%) and optimum temperature (27 degrees C). The infective units of the fungus enter the host body through the cuticle and caused mortality within a week. Preliminary trials conducted in Sankeshwar and Dharwad on the efficacy of the fungus against sugarcane wooly aphid under field conditions yielded highly positive results..
