Sydney—BHP Thursday announced Mike Henry will replace Andrew Mackenzie as chief executive officer on January 1, as the giant miner continues its policy of appointing the top job from within. Henry is currently President Operations Minerals Australia, overseeing BHP’s iron ore and metallurgical coal business, and has been on the executive leadership team since 2011. His move to CEO will come as a surprise to few people as Henry has been groomed for the role, with plenty of profile in Australia in particular, where BHP is domiciled. In a statement early Thursday, Henry said under his leadership BHP would “unlock even greater value from our ore bodies and petroleum basins.”
