Hong Kong—The coronavirus pandemic will lead to the deterioration of key aluminum market fundamentals in 2020, as issues related to it is expected to “seriously influence business conditions in all affected regions,” resulting in greater supply surplus and weaker consumer demand, Rusal said Monday in its 2020 first quarter trading report. Global primary aluminum demand fell 6.4% in Q1 to 14.43 million mt, with demand in China shrank 6.3% to 7.83 million mt and the rest of the world dropped 6.5% to 6.6 million mt, the integrated aluminum producer said. Transport has been the sector most affected by COVID-19, while the impact on the packaging segment is growing.
