Emergence of plant molecular biology viewed through the portal ofchloroplast research

Plant molecular biology emerged in the early 1970s in the laboratories of plant biochemists and geneticists who recognized molecular biology as powerful new way to attack questions they were addressing. By 1985 additional biochemists and geneticists, as well as physiologists and developmental biologists, had begun to bring molecular biology to their research problems, Eventually plant breeders, evolutionary botanists, systematists and environmental botanists joined in. Chloroplast biology was one of the earliest areas of plant research to which molecular biology was applied. This was in part because the plastid genome proved to be small and also because, in the early 1970s when the chloroplast genome was starting to be studied, considerable progress was being made in understanding photosynthesis and the photosynthetic apparatus. In this paper the emergence and progress in chloroplast molecular biology is traced along the course of the development of ideas and techniques of molecular biology. This outline is intended to serve as a framework for examining the growth of other kinds of plant molecular biology.
