摘要

Leptadaenia reticulata (Retz.) Wt. & Arn. (family Asclepiadaceae) is a climber found in forests and gardens near thorny trees. It is commonly known as Jivanti, Swamjivanti or Dori. The botanical identity of the drug made from this plant is highly disputed. Some authors from the north have equated it with Flickingeria nodosa (Dalz.) Seiden f. (= Dendrobium macraei Auct.), an orchid. Yet, others consider L. reticulata as the source of the drug and real Jivanti. Ayurvedic formulary of India also accepts this as the true drug plant. Some other medicinally important plants known by the name of Jivanti are: Cimcifuga foetida (Ranunculaceae) and Holostemma rheedii and Dregea volubilis (Asclepiadaceae). In fact, L. reticulata is well known as Jivanti, but traders/manufacturers use the above species in the name of Jivantil Deora and Jhala reported L. reticulata as a threatened climber from Rajasthan. Shah advocated the development of agrotechnologies for each vulnerable species so that their cultivation can be taken up. Thus, the present communication deals with the distribution, phenology, economic importance, cultivation and multiplication under experimental nursery/field conditions by application of different agrotechniques to increase plant biomass.
