摘要

Helium has been detected above the atmospheric background to levels of 2% in air at the surface within I in above the ground, in the Bakreswar-Tantloi geothermal area. The gas is released in periodic bursts. Soil air within shallow auger holes (75 cm deep) shows anomalous high helium concentrations at some locations. This communication describes details of the observed unusually large-scale helium escape through the earth's surface in the geothermal area and the experimental methods adopted for its quantitative confirmation.
