摘要

The tectonic setting of the region around epicenter of Sumatra earthquake of Dec 26,2004, which produced one of the largest Tsunami waves causing huge destruction in the countries in its path is described. Large magnitude earthquake in this sector may be caused due to junction of four plate viz. Burma micro plate, Sunda plate and Indo-Australian plate. Besides being a subduction zone along Sunda trench, large sediment thickness in central Indian Ocean deformation zone and its deformation in the form of folding, faulting etc are emphasized which might have enhanced Tsunami waves. The extension of continental shelf between east coast of Sri Lanka and Cudallore and Nagapattinam sector along the east coast of India is suggested as plausible cause for large destruction in the two regions.
