The paper explains why 28 March 2005 Sumatra earthquake generated only a minor Tsunami. The main reason responsible for tsunami height argued in the paper is the amount of vertical slip of the ocean floor due to the earthquake. Power of the tsunami depends upon the rupture area and landslide associated with the earthquake. The height of the water column above the rupture zone may also affect the tsunami height and power but is not the primary influencing factor. The paper also gives the possible sites of the future tsunamigenic earthquakes in the Indian Ocean. Probability of a strong tsunami hitting East coast of India from Andaman-Sumatra belt in coming two decades is low while probability of strong tsunami is high along west coast that could be generated in Makran.
