摘要

The study area Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu is the fourth largest metropolis in India. Four areas were chosen in North Chennai, namely Manali, Ennore, Ambattur and Thiruvottriyur. Groundwater samples were collected from thirty-five stations covering the four areas during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon of the year 2000-01 and were analysed for physicochemical characters. The type of water that predominated in the study area was assessed based on hydrochemical facies. Besides, suitability of groundwater for irrigation was evaluated based on sodium adsorption ratio, per cent sodium, residual sodium carbonate and the US salinity diagrams..
