In eukaryotes, ribosomal RNA genes occur in tandem arrays of hundreds to thousands of copies, at chromosomal loci known as nucleolus organizer regions (NORs). The rRNA genes exist as repeat units of 18S-5.8S-26S genes; individual genes within each repeat unit are separated by two internal transcribed spacer regions, ITS1 and ITS2. Different repeat units are separated by intergenic spacer (1GS) sequences'. While the sequences of genes are highly conserved across taxa, the spacer sequences show large amount of intra- as well as inter-specific variability.
