During 2002, in the Garacharma farm of Central Agricultural Institute (Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India), it was observed that cuttings of alligator apple (Annona glabra) were untouched by Achatina fulica. Studies were conducted to use them as a snail repellent to protect the nursery beds that are damaged by A. fulica. In choice tests using softwood cuttings of 7 plants, Moringa pterygosperma [M. oleifera] was the most preferred by the snail, recording the maximum area fed (47.14 cm2). Cuttings of Annona glabra were significantly protected from the snail, being totally untouched. Other members of Annonaceae, Annona reticulata, Annona muricata and Annona squamosa, were not readily preferable. The 2 members of Oxalidaceae, Averrhoa carambola and Averrhoa bilimbi, were fed to an extent of 34.28 and 31.64 cm2, respectively. To confirm the repellent and antifeedant activity of Annona glabra against Achatina fulica, all cuttings were planted closely as a fence around Tagetes erecta nursery bed. Annona glabra kept the nursery free from Achatina fulica, followed by the other Annonaceae species, which also repelled the snails from gaining entry. All snails gained entry into beds lined by M. pterygosperma and the Oxalidaceae species. The repellent activity of Annona glabra and other Annonaceae species may be attributed to their annonacin content. This method of establishing Annona glabra softwood cutting fence is a feasible and practical alternative to protect nursery beds from Achatina fulica.
