The study area Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu isthe fourth largest metropolis in India. Four areaswere chosen in North Chennai, namely Manali, En-nore, Ambattur and Thiruvottriyur. Groundwatersamples were collected from thirty-five stations cover-ing the four areas during pre-monsoon and post-monsoonof the year 2000-01 and were analysed for physico-chemical characters. The type of water that predomi-nated in the study area was assessed based on hydro-chemical facies. Besides, suitability of groundwater forirrigation was evaluated based on sodium adsorptionratio, per cent sodium, residual sodium carbonate andthe US salinity diagrams.
