The biochemical and genetic characteristics of A. hydrophila isolated from catla (Catla catla) and mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) with dropsy in Meghalaya, India [date not given], are presented. Symptoms were observed in 5-10% of the fish population, with 5% mortality in fish weighing ~500 g. Degeneration of the lamellar structure of the gills, congested liver, distended intestines and fluid in the abdomen were found during postmortem examination of affected fish. All isolates fermented arabinose, salicin, galactose, lactose, xylose, sucrose, mannose and maltose sugars. Experimental infection of catla and mrigal with 1.5x109 CFU/0.2 ml/fish resulted in the appearance of clinical signs after 72 h followed by death after 4 days in catla and 6-8 days postinfection in mrigal. The isolates were sensitive to gentamicin chlortetracycline; resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol and erythromycin and showed varying resistance to cloxacillin. The isolates also showed different polypeptide patterns. Virulence factors including amylase, gelatinase, caseinase, DNAase and beta -haemolysin were also produced by the isolates. Haemolysin and aerolysin genes were amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). These findings confirm the diagnosis of an A. hydrophila outbreak in catla and mrigal cultured in Meghalaya..
