Did Editor-in-Chief Robert's compelling personal nkrra-tive resonate with you as much as it did with us? His personal story of a very active 61-year old wishing to remain active while struggling with degenerating hip and knee joints (shared with us in his Editorial in this issue of Current Sports Medicine Reports) illustrates what we all know: with an aging population, there is a veritable tsunami of patients coming to us with degenerative arthritis. Dr. Robert's story captures the personal toll of this disease, once felt to be merely a problem where joints were stiff and achy. The societal toll is illustrated through startling statistics; arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States, with one in five U.S. adults reporting doctor-diagnosed arthritis (1) -with a lifetime risk of one in two. More than 1 million knee and hip replacements are performed in the United States each year (2) - the cost of managing this represents 1 % of our gross domestic product! (5). The end does not appear to be in sight, and we are now seeing this disease even in a younger population. It is evident that our current approach to managing arthritis simply is not acceptable to address the global burden of musculoskeletal disorders, of which osteoarthritis (OA) is by far the most prevalent.
